Scientific Diving

What is scientific diving?

ABOUT

Jesse Short, Lead Scientific Diver & Head of Dive Program, conducting an underwater survey

Scientific diving is defined by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) as diving conducted solely in support of scientific research or education. In practice, it is a tool used by trained researchers to study and understand underwater environments—supporting work such as biological surveys, habitat assessments, species monitoring, and environmental data collection in both marine and freshwater systems. It allows scientists to directly observe and interact with ecosystems in ways that aren’t possible from the surface, producing more accurate and meaningful data.

To support this work, the American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS) has developed a nationally recognized framework for training and operations that aligns with OSHA’s scientific diving exemption. These standards are widely adopted by universities, government agencies, and research institutions, ensuring that scientific diving is conducted safely, consistently, and with a high level of professional and scientific rigor.

    Deliver with Confidence

When we deliver, it’s not just a finished product—it’s a solution you can trust, backed by real care and effort.

WHAT SETS US APART

What sets us apart is a combination of strong scientific training and proven diving capability. As Oregon locals, we work extensively in these rivers and streams and are comfortable operating in low visibility and moving water—allowing us to collect consistent, high-quality data in conditions where that can be difficult to achieve.

Our background in survey design and methodology means we approach each project with intention, selecting or adapting methods to best answer the question at hand rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach. As a small team, we are efficient, responsive, and able to adapt in the field while maintaining a high standard of work. Our small team allows us to provide scientific diving at an affordable cost to help complete important work.

We prioritize quality and efficiency equally, delivering reliable results without unnecessary complexity or delay. We have the equipment and training to help with a wide array of project types. Reach out to us today to learn more!
